OVERVIEW / SUMMARY:

A five-year study of Healthcare acquisition premiums depicts a dramatic upward trend. While valuations are high in all aspects of healthcare, companies with business models built around innovative technologies are trending slightly higher than those with service-delivery models.

Within the technology segment, biotech targets are commanding some of the highest premiums. Hear our experts explain why biotechnology deals are gaining ground and why cross-border deals are also on the rise. Foreign buyers, often with deep pockets, are making record investments into the U.S. health care industry through mergers and acquisitions.

While companies need to get more creative in financing deals in the current credit crisis, the primary reasons to chase health care mergers and acquisitions linger steadfastly in place: to merge disjointed providers to meet increasing demand in areas such as services and new technologies.

As a consequence, there is an M&A spending-spree underway. Since 2005, strategic acquisitions by pharmaceutical companies have exceeded $76 Billion. In 2005, there were 33 such deals amounting to $16.5 Billion – while in the first 9 months of 2007, 49 deals totaling $28.7 Billion were consummated! And financial buyers, led by private equity, hedge funds and other sophisticated investors are also continuing to play a big role in this space.

iiBIG’s Investment and M&A Opportunities in HEALTHCARE occurs at an exciting time for investors and other deal-makers seeking lucrative gains in 2009.

As 2008 comes to a close, deal value in the HEALTHCARE continues to increase. These results indicate strong activity in health care M&A despite the crisis that plagued the capital markets in the third quarter. The historically low dollar, coupled with downward pressure on valuations, has created many attractive opportunities in the U.S. market. The three sectors with the highest deal value in the Q3:08 are:

  • Medical Devices – 32 deals, worth $525.80 million
  • Biotechnology – 18 deals, $468.20 million
  • Pharmaceuticals – 19 deals, $430.43 million
